Description

Pelagodoxa henryana is considered to be native to the Marquesas Islands, an isolated group of islands south of the Equator in the central Pacific Ocean.

This strange and very beautiful palm sports a moderately tall, slender, smooth trunk topped by a spreading crown of large, undivided leaves that are silver / whitish below and may be split by strong winds.

The large fruits are covered in a curious, warty skin and can reach 10 cm in diameter or perhaps more. Pelagodoxa henryana has been confused with the similar Pelagodoxa mesocarpa from Vanuatu for decades. It can be distinguished by its shorter, wider leaf with a green midrib

The leaves are large, undivided, and may extend to 3 m long and to about 1 m wide. The upper surface is green and the lower surface has a distinctive silvery, white colouration.

Pelagodoxa henryana is an extremely beautiful, somewhat difficult palm to germinate and grow but are well worth the effort. It is adapted to the humid tropical climates, It's elegant foliage and small stature make it suitable for a smaller landscapes.

People who live in colder climates can still enjoy the palms as potted plants. Seed is not often available from cultivated plants, for this reason, it has been an expensive item, normally reserved for collectors. It has a fibrous root system and benefits from deep organic, soils that are fertile, as long as they are well drained.

Likes a half-shaded, sheltered position. If home-grown, give some sun as with most tropical palms. Seeds take 4-6 months to germinate and can be erratic with poor germination rates, which is another reason they are not offered for sale often. It prefers adequate moisture to look its best. Don't let sit in water though. Indoor, potted palms should not be over-watered.

4.8 / 5.0

I received an order last week and am so happy with it that I have just made another order. The plants are strong and healthy and the service prompt and easy to order. Thank you for your great service.

Patricia Edwards

Holly has been so helpful, she has been great in sending us tree photos, hole dimensions and upgrading our order with new stock arriving, very happy with the prompt replies and great service we have received – thank you

Eddie C

Could not recommend enough - I placed quite a large order and needed it delivered on a particular day. Holly was extremely helpful in getting that organised and even assisted with a last minute plant swap.

Harry Hart

I bought a Lilly Pilly from here and 100% will be buying from these guys again. Although the first tree didn’t look good within the first week, the team were so helpful and provided great service with the 30 day guarantee.

Sophie Robertson

Extremely impressed with the easy to navigate website, huge selection of plants but best of all were the prices. As we were looking to buy bulk Lilly Pilly’s for a hedge the discounts available were fantastic for a 10 pack.

Jessica Roe

We've used Brisbane Plant Nursery for a few of our projects over the past year and have been impressed with the quality of stock and the communication of any updates for our orders.
